A 16-year-old boy witnesses said tried to prevent an armed robbery was shot and killed by the suspect at a Phoenix park Thursday night, according to Phoenix police.

The suspect is believed to have committed one armed robbery in the area of Marivue Park near 5500 W. Osborn Rd. and was in the process of committing another when Andrew Murphy tried to intervene and was shot about 7:35 p.m., according to Officer James Homes of the Phoenix Police Department.

Police talked with witnesses and shortly after arrested an 18-year-old man near 5400 W. Osborn Rd. and booked him into jail on suspicion of first-degree murder, two counts of armed robbery and one count of aggravated assault, according to Holmes.

Police would not identify the suspect until further investigation, Holmes said.

No other information was immediately available.
